One-year Master's degree

Official degree certificates are issued by the Degree Office at Lund University

A one-year Master's degree can be issued with a major in Economics, Health Economics, International Economics with a Focus on China, and in Finance.

Please note. The master's programme in Economics is a two-year programme and leads to a two-year degree. A student that wants to study for a one-year degree in Economics is advised to apply for free-standing courses. The master’s program contains a first semester of obligatory courses, which limits the types of required course combinations that can be obtained after one year of study (see below for details    

Degree of Master of Science (60 credits) - Major in Economics
(alt. Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics)

In order to qualify for a one-year Master's degree in Economics, the following requirements must be fulfilled:

- 60 credits at the advanced level, of which at least 52.5 credits must refer to advanced courses in Economics. The remaining 7.5 credits can be from other subjects (must be approved in advance by the Department of Economics).

One of the following course combinations must be included in the degree:

Can be awarded after having completed one year within the master's programme in Economics. 

  • NEKN21 (Adv. Microeconomic Analysis), NEKN31 (Adv. Econometrics), NEKN41 (Adv. Macroeconomic Analysis), and NEKN01 (Master Essay).

Cannot be awarded after having completed one year within the master's programme in Economics.

  • Either NEKN21 (Adv. Microeconomic Analysis) or NEKN31 (Adv. Econometrics), together with NEKN81 (Foundations of Finance), NEKN82 (Empirical Finance), NEKN83 (Financial Valuation and Risk Managment), and NEKN01 (Master Essay).
  • Either NEKN21 (Adv. Microeconomic Analysis) or NEKP31 (Mathematical Methods - Static Optimisation) together with NEKN31 (Adv. Econometrics), NEKN33 (Microeconometrics), NEKN34 (Time Series Analysis), and NEKN01 (Master Essay).
  • NEKN21 (Adv. Microeconomic Analysis), NEKP31 (Mathematical Methods - Static Optimisation) or NEKN32 (Mathematical Methods), NEKP21 (Microeconomics - Individual Choice), and NEKN01 (Master Essay).


Degree of Master of Science (60 credits) - Major in Health Economics
(alt. Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics)

Cannot be awarded after having completed one year within the master's programme in Economics. 

In order to qualify for a one-year Master's degree in Health Economics, the following requirements must be fulfilled:

- 60 credits at the advanced level, of which at least 52.5 credits must refer to advanced courses in Economics. The remaining 7.5 credits can be from other subjects (must be approved in advance by the Department of Economics).

The following courses must be included in the degree:

- NEKN21 Advanced Microeconomic Analysis
- NEKN31 Advanced Econometrics
- NEKN51 Economic Evaluation
- NEKN61 Advanced Health Economics
- NEKN33 Applied Microeconometrics
- Optional

- NEKN06 Master Essay in Health Economics


Degree of Master of Science (60 credits) - Major in International Economics with a Focus on China
(alt. Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics)

In order to qualify for a one-year Master's degree in International Economics with a Focus China, the following requirements must be fulfilled:

- 60 credits at the advanced level, of which at least 52.5 credits must refer to advanced courses within International Economics with a Focus on China, Economics and Economic History. The remaining 7.5 credits can be from other subjects (must be ain advance approved by the Department of Economics).

In order to qualify for a one-year Master's degree in Finance, the following requirements must be fulfilled:

- NEKN82 (Empirical Finance)
- NEKN93 (Theory of Corporate Finance)
- NEKN86 (Financial Valuation and Risk Management, 5 cr)
- NEKN87 (Fixed Income and Derivatives, 5 cr)
- NEKN94 (Managerial Finance, 5 cr)

- Master Essay, 15 credits
