Thesis defence coming up: Three questions for Hampus Poppius

Published: 2021-05-18

After completing the doctoral education PhD student Hampus Poppius will defend his thesis 25 May. Get a quick glimpse of his thesis, experiences and near future.

Hampus Poppius will defend his thesis at LUSEM 25 May.

Hi, Hampus! You are about to defend your thesis Quantitative studies on pricing and consumer behavior. In short, what is your thesis about?

"My thesis is about anti-competitive behavior in e-commerce. I study prices over time for all consumer goods sold online in Sweden, and reveal two sorts of pricing patterns that are strongly coherent with anti-competitive practices. One is that competing retailers can more easily collude on high prices when they meet in multiple product markets, compared to when retailers meet only in one product market. In other words, the retailers mutually refrain from price competition because such price pressure can spread to other product markets where the same retailers also operate. The second anti-competitive practice is that manufacturers may prohibit their retailers from charging low prices. By maintaining high retail prices, the manufacturers can more easily sustain collusion/cartels with rival manufacturers and extract higher profits. These results have important implications for competition policy."

In three words, how would you describe your years as a PhD student at LUSEM?

Explorative

"I have had the opportunity to explore economic concepts and statistical methods of my own choosing even though the immediate applicability has not always been obvious."

Challenging

"My advisors and peers have constantly challenged me to work harder and think more deeply, never accepting good enough when I can do better."

Humbling

"I have met tremendously smart and ambitious people throughout these years. I have been impressed many times and realized how much it takes to conduct research of truly high quality and relevance."

What are you up to now?

"First, I am doing full time parenting with my lovely daughter Märta. Then I will work with data where there is interesting data to work with. Time will tell where, exactly, that will be."

Thank you, Hampus! Wishing you all the best!
