Research interest: development economics specialising in population, gender and environmental issues; agriculture and rural development; small industries and the informal sector in Asian countries: social capital, institutions and common-pool resources in India and Bangladesh,  and service provision in health and education sector

  • The Access to Primary Health Care Facilities in the Rural Areas of Bangladesh: An Analysis of Household Data from Khulna Division in Bangladesh , part of the final report of the Sida-financed project on health care in Bangladesh.

  • The Civil Society and Service Provision in the Health and Education Sector of  Bangladesh and West Bengal, India, A Conceptual paper prepared for the research proposal to SAREC for 2007. 

On-going work

  • Diversification of agriculture and the rural economy in Thailand – An Analysis of data for 1987, 1995 and 1998. The report is under preparation with the financial support from the Center for East and Southeast Asian Studies, Lund University,  A follow-up study (financed by the Research Council, Sweden) undertaken in Thailand and Vietnam is in the process of completion. There is research cooperation with Kasetsart University, Thailand and Cu Long Delta Rice Research Institute, Vietnam and the Department of Human Geography, Hanoi University, Vietnam.
  • Involved in developing a research programme (State, Community and Resources) on common-pool resource management in South Asian countries under the initiative of SASNET (South Asian Studies Network). Under the programme a project on Community Management of Fisheries in India and Bangladesh is underway with the financial help from SASNET in cooperation with ISEC, Bangalore, India and BIDS, Bangladesh.
  • Microfinance and Poverty Reduction in the rural sector: a case study of Sri Lanka, three-year project together with Open University, Colombo, and financed by Sida-Swedish Research Links.
  • Community Management of Openwater Inland Fisheries: comparative study of India and Bangladesh, financed by Sida-Swedish Research Links, 3-year project from 2004.
  • Decentralization of the Health Sector in India and Bagladesh: a planning project financially supported by SASNET, Lund University. The planning grant has been used to develop the proposed project.
  • Institutional Problems in the primary healthcare sector of Bangladesh, Two-year research (2005-06) project financed by Sida/SAREC.
  • The Civil Society and Service Provision in the Health and Education Sector: A Comparative Study of West Bengal, India and Bangladesh, Study financed by SAREC, 2007.
