Master degree requirements
General requirment
In order to be awarded a master degree from Lund University, a student must have a completed bachelor
degree equivalent to a Swedish bachelor degree (180 credits).
The Degree Office at Lund University
There is no "graduation day" on which students receive their degree diploma and a
degree diploma is not automatically given to you upon completion of your studies.
An official degree diploma from Lund University is issued, after submission of an application, by the Degree Office at Lund University.
It takes approximately 6-8 weeks to receive the degree diploma.
Please note that the degree requirements (see below) must be fullfilled before a diploma is issued.
Also, you have to submit an official certificate of your bachelor degree (if you have not presented official
degree documents to Lund University earlier).

Master Degree in Economics (60 credits/120 credits)
Master of Science (60 credits) - Major Economics, or
Master of Science in Business and Economics (60 credits) - Major Economics
In order to qualify for a one-year master degree in Economics, the following requirements must be fulfilled:
- 60 credits at the advanced level, of which 52.5 credits must refer to advanced courses in Economics. The remaining 7.5 credits can be from
other subjects
- One of the following course combinations must be included in the degree:
NEKN21 (Adv. Microeconomic Analysis) and NEKN31 (Adv. Econometrics)
NEKN21 (Adv. Microeconomic Analysis) and NEKN41 (Adv. Macroeconomic Analysis)
NEKN21 (Adv. Microeconomic Analysis) and NEKP31 (Math. Methods - Static Opt.)
NEKN31 (Adv. Econometrics) and NEKN41 (Adv. Macroeconomic Analysis)
NEKN31 (Adv. Econometrics) and NEKN81 (Foundations of Finance)

- Essay requirement
NEKN01 - A first year Master Essay in Economics is required.
Master of Science (60 credits) - Major Health Economics, or
Master of Science in Business and Economics (60 credits) - Major Health Economics
Within the MSc in Economics (60/120) it is, as of the autumn term 2010, possible to apply for a major specific degree in Health Economics (one year). In order to qualify for
a one year master degree in Health Economics, the following requirements must be fulfilled:
- 60 credits at the advanced level, of which at least 52.5 credits must refer to advanced courses in Economics. The remaining 7.5 credits can be from
other subjects (must be approved by the Department of Economics).
- The following courses must be included in the degree:
NEKN21 Advanced Microeconomics
NEKN31 Advanced Econometrics
NEKN51 Economic Evaluation
NEKN61 Advanced Health Economics
NEKN33 Applied Microeconometrics
- Essay requirement
NEKN06 - A Master Essay with specialisation in Health Economics is required.
Master of Science (120 credits) - Major Economics, or
Master of Science in Business and Economics (120 credits) - Major Economics
In order to qualify for a two-year master degree in Economics, the following requirements must be fulfilled:
- 120 credits at the advanced level, of which 105 credits must refer to advanced courses in Economics. The remaining 15 credits can be from
other subjects
- The following courses must be included in the degree:
NEKN21 (Advanced Microeconomic Analysis)
NEKN31 (Advanced Econometrics)
NEKN41 (Advanced Macroeconomic Analysis)
- Essay requirement
NEKN01 - A first year Master Essay in Economics is required.
NEKP01 - A second year Master Essay in Economics is required.
Master Degree in Economic Research Methods (60 credits)
Master of Science (60 credits) - Major Economic Research Methods, or
Master of Science in Business and Economics (60 credits) - Major Economic Research Methods
This degree is only available for students admitted to the programme.
In order to qualify for a one-year master degree in Economic Research Methods, the following
requirements must be fulfilled:
- 60 credits at the advanced level, all courses within Economics or Economic Research Methods.
- At least one of the following courses must be included in the degree:

NEKN31 (Advanced Econometrics)
NEKN41 (Advanced Macroeconomic Analysis)
- At least two of the following courses must be included in the degree:

Master Degree in International Economics with a Focus on China (60 credits)
Master of Science (60 credits) - Major International Economics with a Focus on China, or
Master of Science in Business and Economics (60 credits) - Major International Economics with a Focus on China
In order to qualify for a one-year master degree in International Economics with a Focus China, the following
requirements must be fulfilled:
- 60 credits at the advanced level, of which 52.5 credits must refer to advanced courses within
International Economics with a Focus on China, Economics and Economic History. The remaining 7.5 credits can be from
other subjects
- The below courses must be included in the degree:
