Master Programme in Economics

Scope of the programme: 60/120 credits
Level: Advanced (A)
Duration: One year/two years

The Master Programme in economics builds directly upon previous studies in economics at the bachelor level, and prepares students for qualified positions within the private and public sectors. It also satisfied the prerequisites needed for admission to post-graduate studies at the doctoral level, and is an excellent preparation for such studies.

The 1-year programme is designed to give students a sound knowledge in the basic methods of advanced economics, allow them to specialise in a specific area of interest and enable them to apply their knowledge to analyse real world problems. The 2-year programme further deepens this knowledge, broadens the areas of interest and/or introduces the student to research methods.

Students who are registered for the two-year programme can, if desired, cut short their studies and take a one-year degree instead. On the other hand, students who have taken the one-year programme can (after a formal application), either continue to the second year of the two-year programme or apply to the special master programme in Economic Research Methods.

The department of Economics offers the following profiles within the Master Programme in Economics.

There is no requirement of following a specific profile (that is, one can take specialisation courses from different profiles), but it is highly recommended. A profile will give you a specialised area in Economics and by following one of the recommended structures you will also be well prepared for the master essay.

Specific degree major in Health Economics
Within the MSc in Economics (60/120) it is, as of the autumn term 2010, possible to apply for a one year degree with a major in Health Economics (one year). In order to qualify for a one year master degree in Health Economics one must complete a specified set fo courses, see below.

Academic year and programme structure
Regardless of profile and duration, the programme structure is basically the same over an academic year. The structure ensures that the degree requirements (see below) are fulfilled for both the one-year and the two-year degree.

The academic year is divided into two terms:
- Autumn term: 1 Sept-18 Jan.
- Spring term: 19 Jan-7 June.

Each term is divided into two study periods:
- Autumn term: Sept-Oct and Nov-Jan.
- Spring term: Jan-March and April-June.

All courses at the Department of Economics are part-time courses of 7,5 ECTS credits each with a duration of one study period (the master essay is 15 ECTS). For full-time studies, a student takes 30 ECTS each term. This implies that one takes two 7,5 credit courses parallel.

Year one
Year one: core courses
During the first study period, students take 15 ECTS from one out of six combinations of two courses, including at least one of three core courses.

Year one: specialisation courses
During the second and third study period, students take 30 ECTS in specialised courses, chosen within one of the above profiles, or chosen over different profiles.

Year one: Master Essay
At the end of the first year students write a master essay (15 ECTS).

Year two
Year two: core courses
In the first study period, students take either 15 ECTS of core courses, or 7.5 ECTS of core courses and 7.5 ECTS of elective courses (depending on the chosen combination year one).

Year two: specialisation/elective courses
During the second and third study period, first year students take 30 ECTS of electives within economics and other disciplines. The second year courses will either consist of a second specialisation that broadens the scope of the students´ knowledge, of courses in economic research methods that will provide additional depth, or of further courses in their first specialisation.

Year two: Master Essay
At the end of the second year students write a master essay (15 ECTS).

Requirements for a Master Degree
