Practical information for admitted and prospective master students at Lund University

All students admitted to a Master Programme administrated by the Department of Economics should make sure that they have read, and are familiar with, the information provided on this page. This should make your introduction to Lund and your studies here less stressful, and can be specially important for international students.

Visas and residence permits
Note that you may have to apply for a visa and a residence permit if you are accepted to a master programme. You are advised to familiarise yourself with the information provided by the Swedish Migration Board if you plan to apply to a master programme.

You will need visa if you are a non-Nordic, non-EU/EEA citizen and intend to stay in Sweden for less than three months. If your studies in Sweden will take longer than three months, you need to acquire a residence permit before you arrive in Sweden. Permits are issued by the Swedish Migration Board. You must provide documentation that show you have enough money to support yourself throughout the entire planned study period in order to get a residence permit for studies.

If you are a citizen of a non-Nordic EU/EEA country you do not require a visa if you are intending to stay in Sweden for less than three months. EU/EEA citizens no longer need residence permits for staying in Sweden for more than three months. EU/EEA citizens shall instead register their right of residence with the Migration Board no later than three months after entering the country.

Citizens from Nordic countries do not need a visa or residence permit to study in Sweden.

Accommodation
Lund is a small university city with a limited amount of accommodation and many students are looking for housing at the same time. Therefore, we recommend that you have your accommodation sorted out before your arrival.

To find somewhere to live in Lund, Malmö or Helsingborg you can apply via Lund University’s International Housing Office or use an accommodation agency.

We cannot guarantee housing to all students and ultimately it is your own responsibility to find housing. Some students have a housing guarantee. The housing guarantee means that we will provide a place for you to live within the International Housing Office’s housing options.

STiL account and email address
ll students at Lund University have a STiL account (Student in Lund). Information about your personal STiL account, including user-id and password, will be automatically sent to your Swedish address by post once you have been established in the study register and when your address has been submitted. STiL is administrated centrally by Lund University, and includes, for example, a web-based email account. It also allows you to view your personal study records on-line (for example course registrations and course results).

Degree Office
There is no "graduation day" on which students receive their degree diploma and a degree diploma is not automatically given to you upon completion of your studies. An official degree diploma from Lund University is issued, after submission of an application, by the Degree Office at Lund University. It takes approximately 6-8 weeks to receive the degree diploma.

Insurance
As a master student you automatically get an Emergency medical care insurance from Kammarkollegiet, which is paid by Lund university.

Student rights
Your rights as a student in relation to the University and your department are regulated partly in acts and ordinances and partly in decisions by the University, in particular in the list of rights “Guidelines for matters relating to Lund University and its students”, which was adopted by the University Board in December 2008. The list below is a compilation of these rights and covers student influence, students’ working environment, completion of examinations and degree projects and much more.

Student health
Student Health is a service for all students at Lund University. The clinic has counsellors, nurses, a physician, psychiatrist and a psychologist. You need to make an appointment to see us, but you can also ask questions or ask for advice over the phone.
